create-the-expectation

Hello Angela’s Lovelies,

I wanted to share this with you. My dear friend Lil woke me up at 9:30 am Sunday morning by texting two magic words, and next thing I know, I was out the door and we were headed to brunch. The magic words were not “Let’s eat,” but that also works. I got home 7 hours later, so clearly we had a good time.

Somewhere in the long conversation about everything and nothing, the above quote fell out of my mouth. We had to give pause to the moment because that was some divine synergistic somnrother that happened.

It’s two-fold. When someone acts in a way that is not right, or breaks their word, etc., don’t be shocked or surprised when it happens again. They are showing you not only who they are, but what you should expect of them.

Secondly, your actions, your words are creating an expectation that others should have of you. Is it a good one? Is it limiting? If you feel that you aren’t allowed to do what you are capable of, then what is it that you can do to expand or improve their expectation of you?

Every day, you have the power to set yourself up for failure or success. You can meet expectations, fall short of them, or surprise and surpass expectations. Plus, at each turn, you can reshape any previous expectations people have had. So don’t limit yourself. Don’t self-sabotage. And by all means, show them that you are better than they think – but first, know it for yourself, then do it.

Joy in action,

Sean
